After becoming property of the royal family, between 1920 -1930 the castle suffered a series of architectural renovations, aiming to transform it into a modern summer residence. The renovation works were lead by the Czech architect Karel Liman, who also worked at the castles Peleş and Pelişor. Two towers for stairs were added, the bulwarks and the shooting gaps became windows, the stoves and the hearths became modern fireplaces. (more…)
Canyon Diablo was given its name by Lieutenant Whipple in 1853. This canyon presented such an obstacle to his historic thirty-fifth parallel survey party that he wanted to let all that followed know what he thought of it. Devil’s Canyon was appropriately named. Other survey parties, like Whipple’s, had to go miles out of their way just to cross the canyon. (more…)
Established 1720-1725, Fredeiksborg Castle Gardens were laid out in the fashion of the time by the royal architect and landscape designer, Johan Cornelius Krieger. Although no one knew it, the world was about to change drastically. Radio had been invented in 1901. The Wright Brothers’ first successful flight was in 1903. The old presumptions about class, morals, and gender-roles were about to be shattered.
